Trims and Performance
The 2012 MAZDA3 comes in five trims: i SV, i Sport, i Touring, s Touring and s Grand Touring. The I trim offers a 2.0L VVT I-4 engine producing 148 hp, 13 lb-ft of torque and an EPA-estimated 33 MPG highway, while the s trims get an upgraded 2.5L engine that pumps out 167 hp, 168 lb-ft of torque and an EPA-estimated 29 MPG highway. Responsive shifting is delivered via a 5-speed manual transmission on the 2.0L engine or a 6-speed manual transmission on the 2.5L engine. However, a 5-speed automatic transmission is available for both engines (except the i SV trim.
The MAZDA3's advanced suspension system strikes the perfect balance between superior handling and ride comfort. Electro-Hydraulic Power Assist Steering preserves feedback and confidence at high speeds while simultaneously delivering superior maneuverability at low speeds. Front and rear stabilizer bars help keep the vehicle level no matter the terrain. You'll also notice the smooth ride the MAZDA3 delivers. Standard Features and Options
Designed around ergonomic comfort, the MAZDA3 boasts a spacious interior that can accommodate up to five adults in style. Cloth-trimmed or leather-trimmed seats are available in two distinct colors. However, for the ultimate in luxury look, into adding the available heated front seats with 5-level variable heat settings. The MAZDA3 has a welcome lighting system (standard on S trim) that greets drivers with a soft blue illumination in the front doors, instrument panel and overhead console.
The i SV and i Sport trims come standard with an AM/FM/CD/MP3 Stereo with four speakers, while the i Touring and s Touring add two more speakers to the cabin. An in-dash 6CD/AM/FM/MP3, 10-speaker, 265-watt Bose Centerpoint Surround Sound System with AudioPilot 2 brings a front-row concert experience with every song. The Bose Audio System is standard on the s Grand Touring and available on the i and s Touring trims. Steering wheel-mounted audio controls are standard on all trims. An optional Navigation system is optional on the s Touring and s Grand Touring models. Drivers will also appreciate the Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio controls, which come standard on the i Touring and s trims. Safety Features
Safety is not an option with the 2012 MAZDA3. It's standard, with a total of six air bags, including advanced front air bags with seat belt-use, passenger-weight and driver's seat-position sensors to help protect you in the event of a front-end collision and side-impact air curtains to protect both front and outboard rear passengers in case of a side-impact collision. The MAZDA3 also comes equipped with Dynamic Stability Control to modulate engine and brakes when over- or understeer is detected, a Traction Control System to detect wheelspin and reduce engine power in slippery conditions, and an Anti-lock Brake System that prevents wheel lockup in emergency braking situations. An Adaptive Front-Lighting System also helps spot potential danger around every curve. All of these standard features made it an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2011.
